Finally, I called Rachel.
It was evening. I knew she’d be helping Lena with homework.
I told her everything.
There was a brief silence.
Then she said, “Where are you?”
I told her.
“Pack a bag,” she said. “Come here. The couch isn’t great, but it works. I made soup. We’ll figure it out.”
I tried to argue. She didn’t let me.
